Example of News Item Text (News Story) : Killer Cyclone Wrecks 4 Town

Another kind of factual genre is News Story. Some linguist call news story as a news item text type. News Story is a kind of factual genre which inform the readers of daily newspaper about events of the day which are regarded as newsworthy or important. 

Newspaper need to make the news as readable as possible in order to attract as many readers as possible. More readers means more money from advertisers and wider circulation of the newspaper. 

News story especially the ones published in afternoon newspaper, often make the events of the day as dramatic or as sensational as they can in order to make more people buy them. 

News story has three schematic structures (generic structure). News story begin with newsworthy events and then followed by background events and sources. The most difficult things is deciding the newsworthy events because it is the core of the text. 

News story has some specific language features. First, news story use short and telegraphic information about the story summarized in one sentence headline. Second, It use of material or action process to retell the story. In addition, news story also use of projecting verbal process in “Sources” stage. Besides that, news story also focus on circumstance meaning. Last but not the least, news story often use dramatic of participant structure, especially in thematic position.

To make clear, here is an example of News Story (News Item Text). It is taken from the front page of Telegraph 5 April 1989. It informs us about killer cyclone wrecks 4 town.

Example of Procedure Text: How to Make Asparagus and Ricotta Baked Frittata Tart

One of the popular text type or genre is procedure text. Almost the students in high school know what procedure text is. Procedure text can be defined as texts that describe how something is accomplished through sequence of actions or steps. Some people say that procedure text is texts that show us about sequence of steps to finish something or to use something. Procedure texts consist of series of actions to be accomplished in order to obtain the same result under the same circumstances. 

Procedure text has specific generic structure. It consist of goal or aim (usually is a title of the text), material (optional, not all procedure text use material in it) and steps (action must be taken). 

Most procedure texts give information about how to do something or how something is accomplished through sequence of actions or steps. Procedure Text tells us about food recipes, manual book of electronic appliances or how to make something.

Here is one of the examples of procedure text about food recipe. This procedure text gives information how to make asparagus and ricotta baked frittata tart.

How to Make Asparagus and Ricotta Baked Frittata Tart

Ingredients

  • 2 bunches baby asparagus, trimmed
  • 8 eggs
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) milk
  • 75g grated parmesan
  • 400g ricotta
  • 1 tbs thyme leaves, chopped
  • 250g baby truss tomatoes or cherry tomatoes
  • 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil
  • Micro rocket to serve (optional)

Steps

  • First of all, preheat oven to 200°C. Grease and line a 20x30cm lamington pan with baking paper.
  • Secondly, bring a saucepan of water to the boil. Add the asparagus and cook for 1 minute then drain and rinse under cold water.
  • After that, combine eggs, milk, parmesan, ricotta, half the thyme and season. Pour into tin and top with asparagus. Bake 25 minutes or until risen and cooked through.
  • Next, place the tomatoes on a tray lined with baking paper, drizzle with oil then scatter with remaining thyme. Season and roast on the shelf under the frittata.
  • Finally, serve frittata with tomatoes and micro rocket.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basil leaves
  • 1 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves
  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 6 eggs
  • 500g ricotta
  • ¼ cup (20g) parmesan
  • 2 tbs extra virgin olive oil, plus extra to serve
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1½ cups baby kale, plus extra leaves to serve
  • 1 zucchini, shaved in strips using a vegetable peeler
  • 4 stalks asparagus, shaved into strips with a vegetable peeler
  • Lemon juice, to serve

Method

  • Firstly, preheat oven to 180°C.
  • Secondly, place the herbs and spinach in a food processor and whiz until finely chopped. Add the eggs, ricotta, parmesan and season, then whiz until smooth.
  • After that, heat oil in a fry pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened. 
  • Then, add the garlic and cook for a further 1 minute until fragrant. Add the baby kale and zucchini strips. Remove from the heat.
  • Next, add the egg mixture and stir to combine and distribute the ingredients in the pan.
  • After that, place in the oven and cook 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden on top. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool for 5 minutes, and then slide out of the pan.
  • Finally, serve topped with asparagus, extra kale leaves and drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil.

Report Text about Animal (The Sugar Glider)

Most report texts give information about the world and they can be used to document and store information about different subjects. Reports classify and describe living things like plants and animal, non living things like volcanoes, tidal waves, the stars and the things in the society like the way people organize the government, the education system and different kinds of technology like computers, television, mobile phone or satellites. 

Many different kinds of people write reports. Many experts in science and technology write report to give information. People with special interest or hobbies also write reports. 

Some report texts are for written readers who are only just starting to learn about particular animal or machine. Some of them are starting to learn about part of the human or animal body. Others are written for readers who already know a great deal but who want to learn more. 

Some of example of report genre is information about living things (reptile, mammals, etc), information about cultural phenomena, information about technology, information about health service, and so on. Here is one of the examples of report text about animal. This report text give information and describe about an animal namely Sugar Glider.

The Sugar Glider
The Sugar Glider is a marsupial mammal. It is belonging to marsupial infra class.
The Sugar glider does not fly it glides. They glide from branch to branch. The sugar glider launches itself from a tree then spreading it’s limb to exposes the gliding membranes.
Physically, sugar gliders are small animal. They are about 120 g when they are adult. They have grey fur and large dark eyes. The sugar glides have squirrel like a long tail. The sugar glider’s baby have no fur and stay in the mother’s pouches for several weeks
The Sugar gliders are omnivore actually. They eat nectar, sap, flower buds and insects. They consume approximately 11 grams of dry food per day.
The sugar glider is a nocturnal marsupial. They are active at night and shelter in tree hollow lined with leafy twigs during the day.
The sugar gliders can be found through the Northern and Eastern part of mainland Australia, Tasmania Island, New Guinea and Indonesia.

Report Text about the Heart

The heart is a huge organ of muscle.
The function of the heart is to pump the blood through the body. The heart is made up of four chambers, but has two hard working pumps; one is to force blood to the lungs and the other to force blood to the rest of the body.
Each person’s body contains about 4,7 liters of blood. The function of blood is to help carry food and oxygen and the other is to protect us from germs. The tubes that receive blood from the body are called veins. The blood in the veins is dark red because it is full of oxygen. The white cells act to protect the body from invading germs. The blood receives oxygen from the lungs.

A computer is an electric machine used for to make a human’s work easier.
Computers are designed to do many things. Among these is the ability to play games for children. Computers can also do word processing. This means that people can play music and video in a computer which is completed with active speaker. People also can make music and video using computer.
There are many types of computer. But it is not to mention the number of computer brands. The three main types computer are mainframe computers, micro computers and mini computers.
Mainframe computers are very large computers that are stacked up on frames. They usually have many inputs and output terminal such as keyboard and monitor. They are sometime stacked up in the middle of room although they are generally stacked up against the walls of a room.
Micro computers are the most common type of computers. These computers run on a micro-chip. They can only hold one input and output terminal plus a printer.
Mini computers run on mini-chip. They can do a lot of things that a micro computer can’t. For instance they can support many input and output terminals. They are also a lot of faster than a micro computer.
